In 1989 Cycletours Holidays thought of organizing something typically 'Dutch'. Then they came up with the introduction of their Bike & Barge Holidays! The bicycle is as much a part of Holland as the tulip, the windmill and the clog. Children learn how to cycle before they can walk and a pensioner doing the shopping by bicycle is no uncommon sight. It appears that even the Queen herself has been seen on her two- wheeled iron steed. The 15 million inhabitants of the Netherlands own 15 million bicycles. The country's infrastructure has been adapted to the use of the bicycle. There is a network of cycle paths of 20,000 kilometers!, with cycle bridges, cycle tunnels and cycle ferries. Besides there are the windmills, dunes, dikes, woods and beaches. But there is more .... rivers, lakes, canals, the IJssellake and the Waddensea.
