Safari & Wildlife Viewing in Angola
Highlights
Remote wilderness and stunning landscapes Himba & Mucubal tribes & local markets Great gamelands of Etosha National Park
Himba and Iona National Park From Windhoek we first head north through Namibia's remote northern provinces of Damaraland and Kaokoland and cross the border into Angola at Ruacana. Here we explore the heartland of the Himba, semi-nomadic pastoralists whose customs and language have remained unchanged for centuries. Continuing north we reach Iona National Park, the country's largest protected area, a continuation of the Namib-Naukluft and Skeleton Coast and bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and Cunene and Curoca Rivers. Known for its rock formations, varied landscapes and unique flora including the stunning Welwitschia Mirabilis, we also search for wildlife including springbok, kudu, ostrich, oryx and even cheetah. Atlantic Coast and Leba mountains Travelling via Espinheira we reach Flamingo Camp near the mouth of the dry Rio Dos Flamingos on a vast stretch of uninhabited wild Atlantic coastline. Next we visit a traditional market of the Namibe Province and onto Lake Arco, a hidden treasure located within a canyon; on the banks of this freshwater oasis, magnificent sandstone rock formations form the backdrop for lush aquatic vegetation, water lilies and a diversity of birds. Next we climb Leba mountain pass to the city of Lubango on the Leba Plateau. Nestled in a lush tropical valley surrounded by mountains, Lubango dates back to the Portuguese colonial period and is dominated by a replica of Rio de Janeiro's statue of Christ. Etosha National Park We make our way out of Angola via Cahama and once again enter Namibia's remote north. On our way back to Windhoek we spend two nights in its pre-eminent reserve, Etosha National Park. At its heart lie the sprawling salt pans, once a lake the size of Holland. Dating back some 12 million years, it's now a silvery depression of dust-laden mirages. In terms of game viewing, many consider Etosha as one of the very best parks in Africa and here you can find wildlife in all its abundance. We end our tour with game drives in search of elephant, rhino and lion as well as springbok, zebra, wildebeest and giraffe around the numerous waterholes.
