Chiang Mai & UNESCO-listed Luang Prabang Once part of the same ancient kingdom many centuries ago, these two cities now offer a marked contrast and fascinating insight into the region. From the lively buzz of Chiang Mai's markets, Doi Suthep hilltop temple and an optional Thai cookery class our flight to Laos feels like a step back in time to another age. We enjoy an innovative insight tour of Luang Prabang combining classic temples, a Mekong boat to Pak Ou caves, an artisan village, silversmith's workshop and the arts and ethnology centre. With three nights in the ancient royal capital there is plenty of free time to soak up the charming atmosphere. Vientiane & Four Thousand Islands of the Mekong Our next step down the Mekong brings us to the sleepy capital of Vientiane where we enjoy a city tour. In a country that embodies peace and serenity the southern stretches of the Mekong are the most laid-back and relaxing of all. We fly south to our comfortable Don Daeng island hotel, on the banks of the Mekong, from where we explore the sacred Khmer temple of Wat Phou, cruise through the 'four thousand islands' of the inland Mekong delta and see the impressive falls of Khone Phapheng - the largest waterfall in SE Asia. Khmer Temples of Angkor & Bangkok Another short flight south lands us in the modern town of Siem Reap, perfectly positioned for exploring the jungle-clad ruins of the ancient Khmer kingdom. We spend three nights here with ample time to discover the spell-binding temples scattered through the jungle and built by the Khmer kings some 800 years ago. A flight takes us to our journey's end in busy and cosmopolitan Bangkok, where we explore its cultural heritage.
